Poster Contest-BRIGHTER FUTURES
Brighter Futures held a poster contest, Feelings Matter,  and the following students participated and won:

Charles McCoy, Gr. 5, Mr. Mattson



Brighter Futures Initiative (BFI) promotes healthy families and youth; school readiness for children; child safety in their families and communities; and successful navigation from childhood to adulthood. The Initiative supports the following:

  • Prevent and reduce the incidence of youth violence and other delinquent behavior;
  • Prevent and reduce the incidence of youth alcohol and other drug use and abuse;
  • Prevent and reduce the incidence of child abuse and neglect;
  • Prevent and reduce the incidence of non-marital pregnancy and increase the use of abstinence to prevent non-marital pregnancy; and
  • Increase adolescent self-sufficiency by encouraging high school graduation, vocational preparedness, improved social and other interpersonal skills and responsible decision-making.
Civic Oration Contest Winners!
The Civic Oration Contest for the Great Lakes School was held on March 26th in the Lake Superior Commons!  The topic for this year is Healthy Lifestyles!  All the students did an excellent job and there were many moving speeches so it was a hard choice.  The winners are:

                                 Shea Callaghan, Gr. 5, Mr. Mattson- 2nd Place
                                 Ethan Welch, Gr. 5, Mr. Mattson-3rd Place
                                 
February is Reading is Fun Month!
Great Lakes and The Edge Water Park sponsored a Reading is Fun competition at Great Lakes in February!  The top 3 winners were awarded 4 water park tickets each to spend a day of fun!  Each teacher turned in names of students who excelled in reading or had made great accomplishments towards their reading goals!  The names were put in a drawing and these are the winners:

Principal's Awards for 2nd Quarter-13/14
Each quarter the principal, Cindy Magnuson, chooses two students who are excelling in academics and citizenship for the quarter.  This second quarter, the recipients are Krimsyn Fleck in Mrs. Johnson-Garay's 3rd grade class and Justin Rookey, Jr. in Mrs. T. Walt's 1st grade class! 
Congratulations on an excellent job! 

Snow/Cold Make-Up Days
Previously, on the School District Calendar, it was noted there would not be school on Monday, April 21, 2014 and the last day of school for students would be Wednesday, June 11, 2014.  Due to inclement weather the following days will be "make-up" days for staff and students in the Superior School District:

Monday, April 21, 2014-school is in session
Thursday, June 12, 2014-school is in session
Friday, June 13, 2014-school is in session until 12:00 p.m. (after lunch) dismissal time

Great Lakes Spelling Bee Winners!
Congratulations to all the participants in the Great Lakes' Spelling Bee!  They all did a wonderful job and we're proud of them!  Thank you to Mrs.Carroll for being an excellent coordinator; and thank you to Mrs. Magnuson, Mrs. Ansell and Mrs. Madden for being judges!  The Spelling Bee was held on Friday, 1/14/14 in the gym:
